Slow breathing and long exhalation in Yoga practice reduces stress. Breathing exercises also aid in losing weight. In addition to urine and sweat, lungs too are major organs that aid in excretion of waste products from your body!

How Is Yoga Different From Stretching or Other Kinds of Fitness

Yoga is a powerful tool for self-transformation.

Yoga encourages you to bring attention to your breath and be mindful and aware of the present moment.

By consciously manipulating the breath rhythm to include slow breathing and long exhalations, Yoga practice reactivates the parasympathetic nervous system. The Parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for ‘rest and digest’ and ‘feed and breed’ activities. It is responsible for slowing the heart rate and reducing the blood pressure after any fight and flight activity.

Yoga’s unique therapeutic value lies in matching the movements of our body and the awareness of our mind to the rhythm of our breath. This connection of mind-body-breath draws our attention inward and makes us more aware of ourselves and our relationship to the external world. Such a moment-to-moment awareness during Yoga, makes it a fluid practice rather than a task or goal to be completed.

What Do I Need to Begin Yoga?

All you really need to practice Yoga Pose is your body and your mind.

It is also helpful to have a pair of yoga leggings, or shorts, and a t-shirt that’s not too baggy.

No special footgear is required because you will be barefoot.
It would be nice to have a towel with you.

As your practice develops you might want to buy your own yoga mat.
